Mari Johansdatter

? Johans Kalsiøe Hagens barn døbt ved nafn Marj, 26 Aug 1731 Lunder.

Engebret Jensen, age 18, was his mother's oldest (oldest surviving?) child

when her father's estate was probated in 1737; at Hovolsruds Eyer 1755

 1756, at Oppen 1758, at Brische-Bachen 1766, at Haagenstadejen 1770

Mari Johansdatter was at Lunner in 1755, at Oppen 1759 1760.  At the

baptism of her child Engebregt in 1771, the pastor wrote: "Moderen er

The

following entries from the Jevnaker parish register may refer to her:

Widow Mari Johansdatter married Niels Tomasen Solberg Eje 12 March 1780

Lunder.  Mari Johansdtr Moesejen, age 44, was buried 16 April 1780

Gulbrand Jensen was at Hovelsrud when he was married in 1752.  He lived

at Høyby, his wife's family farm, until 1756 when he bought half of

Vestre Totner in Nannestad for 300 dlr.  He and Nils Larsen sold Vestre

Totner 10 July 1758 to Jon Olsen Åmundrud for 800 dlr., and Gulbrand took

over the lease on Åmundrud that Jon had previously held.  His son Jens

took over the lease 9 Dec 1793, and moved to Kopperud in Bjerke Parish in

1800; Gulbrand died at Kopperud later that year (the burial of "Gulbrand

Jonsen Kopperud 83 aar gl.", recorded in the Nannestad parish register,

is probably his burial). (Kirkeby II 242,299)

Gubjør Andersdatter was born at Gagnum in Gran.  In 1736 her father bought

Høyby (Bjørkvik).  Her father died in 1743, and the family lived at Høyby

From the time of their marriage, Anders Gulbrandsen and Eli Helgesdatter

lived at her father's husmannsplass Bråten under Rud øde, although they

were apparently living at Åmundrudfløtten in 1782 ("Anders et Eli

Aamundstuen" at the baptism of their son Ole 24 Feb 1782; "Ole Anders:

Fløtten", their son, was buried 17 March 1782).  Anders took over

Bråten--he was "huusmand med jord og skoemager" in the census of 1801.

The family was living there as late as 1828 when Eli died, but Anders was

living at Herstuen (presumably with his son Ole) when he died in 1833.

Eli was born at Bråten, where her parents had lived since about 1743 (her

grandmother Eli Evensdatter died there in that year "i besøgelse hos sin

 Datter").

Gulbrand Jensen took over the lease on Kopperud after his father.  He

bought the property from the Eidsvoll pastoral office 22 July 1839 for

600 dlr. and jordavgift set at 121 dlr.; the following year he sold two

parcels, one to his brother-in-law Ole Larsen for 350 dlr., and the other

to Jørgen Olsen Jælberg for 300 dlr.  The remaining portion was sold by

his son Olaus to Ole Larsen in 1853.  (Kirkeby III 459)

Johanne's father was farmer at Stensgaard.  After Gulbrand's death,

Johanne lived at Kopperud with her second husband until they emigrated to

America in 1861 with her two youngest surviving sons.  In the Minnesota

state census of 1 June 1865, a household was enumerated in Norway

Township, Fillmore County, consisting of Jens Christopherson, Johanna

Christopherson, and Christian Christopherson, a soldier in actual

service.  If this is Johanne and her family, it is the only record of

their presence in America I have found.  Her brother Ole Larsen Kopperud,

who emigrated at the same time, settled in Norway Township, as had her

brother Johan Larsen Stensgaard who emigrated in 1852.

Jens's father was farmer at Østli.  His brother was the first husband of

Maria Jensdatter, the wife of Christian Gulbrandsen below.

the family lived until 1800 when they moved to Ullensaker (Ullensaker bb

III 607); they were at Elstad in 1801.  dragun 1808 1815.  Dorthe was

living at Skjennum søndre in 1808.  After their marriage, Ole and Dorthe

lived at Herstuen in the years 1816 to 1819, then at Søndre Moen from

1820 to 1822.  They were apparently living at his father's farm, Grønbekk

under Nordby in Ullensaker, in 1824, when their names appear as

godparents for his nephew Svend Mortensen.  Ole was living when his

father's estate was probated in 1831, but nothing further is known of

them.  Their children were all confirmed in Nannestad, the oldest in

1824, the youngest in 1836.  A Dorthe Jensdatter Herberg is mentioned in

1830, and a Dorthe Jensdatter Kopperud in 1842.  When their daughter

Johanne died in 1903, the burial record says she was born at Grønbekk, so

there was memory of a family connection to that farm.

in Dal resulted in errors in the article on Dal in Kirkeby.)  In 1849

Hans bought Dalsbråten for 225 dlr. and jordavgift of 20 dlr.  In the

spring of 1852 he sold it to his brother Halvor for the same amount, and

lived there as føderådsmann until his death.  (Kirkeby III 340)

Mari Jensdatter was born at Ingelsrudstuen.  By 1794 the family had moved

to Kringlerstuen under Sø-Kringler, and by 1815 her father was husmann at

 Låkehaugen.

After their marriage, Gulbrand and Mari lived at Låkehaugen.  Her father

died in 1820, and later that year they are last mentioned as living

there.  In 1823 and 1826 they were at Sørmoen, and by 1833 they had taken

over Bråten after his father.  The family lived there until the oldest

son bought Botten in 1855.  Mari died at Herbergeie in 1858, probably

 living with her son Andreas.

Olaus Gulbrandsen sold Kopperud to his uncle Ole Larsen in 1853 and

emigrated to America (Kirkeby III 582).  It is not known where he settled

first; according to his death record, he came to Minnesota in July 1860.

He farmed in Section 21 Manchester Township.  His death in a snowstorm in

1873 was described in detail in the following newspaper account:

                              Shocking Death.

                        Horrible Case of Freezing.

On Sunday last, Olaus Gulbrandson, a Norwegian, living on

section 22 in the town of Manchester, was found dead on the creek,

south of Charles Bickford's, about six rods from the house of a Mr.

Flint.  When found, he was lying upon his face, evidently as he had

fallen, his hands were drawn up in his mittens, the fingers clasping

tightly the thumbs, showing that they had become intensely cold before

his strength gave out.  He was very poorly clad, his clothing

affording but a slight protection against so pitiless a storm.  The

unfortunate man was in town with an ox team on Tuesday, and left about

the time the storm struck.  His sled was found several rods east of

the Manchester road, and about 20 rods from Mr. Bickford's.  The yoke

was near by, one bow replaced, while the other lay near it.  The oxen

were gone, and up to the present writing, only one of them has been

found.  He is known to have cultivated a habit of riding, under any

circumstance or condition of the weather.  The theory therefore is,

that he kept his position in the sleighbox, trusting to the oxen to

follow the road, until progress was arrested by heavy drifts.  When

finding that the cattle, unable to face the storm, had left the main

road, he tried to get them back but was unable.  Himself already

chilled with cold, he unyoked his oxen, and leaving them to wander

where they might, sought some place of shelter for himself.  He turned

west, crossed the main road, probably without knowing it, continued

substantially this course until he reached the creek, where,

completely, benumbed, stiffened, and exhausted, he pitched headlong

down the depression, and forgot the pelting storm in this, his valley

of death.  He was between 40 and 50 years old, and leaves a wife to

mourn his loss.  One son, grown to manhood, is married and resides in

  Renville County.

        Mr. G. was among the unfortunate, in a financial point of view;

in debt beyond his ability to pay, his farm had but recently been

foreclosed upon, and his widow is left in a helpless and destitute

condition.  (The Freeborn County Standard (Albert Lea, Minnesota),

  Thursday, 16 January 1873)

Karen Olsdatter was born at Ladderud in Ullensaker, but her father bought

Store Røgler in 1815.  She was living with her sister at Furulund when

she got married in 1849.  (Ullensaker bb III 529)

Christian Gulbrandsen married the widow at Østli and took over that

family emigrated to Minnesota.  They were living in Norway Township,

Fillmore County, in 1870; Christian owned a farm in Yucatan Township,

Houston County, from 1875 to 1882, and a farm in Sheldon Township,

Houston County, from 1883 to 1890, when he sold the farm to his son-in-

and was living with his daughter Mary in Houston when he died in 1899.

Anne Dorthea Augustinusdatter was at Sundby in 1836 and 1837, at Kjos in

1850, and at Langerud in 1852.

Christen Olsen's father, who died in 1835, was farmer at Sesvoll.  When

Christen was confirmed in 1843, he was living at Gårdereie, and he

lived here all his life.  In the years from 1854 to 1860, he is

alternately described as husmann and inderst, from 1863 to 1875 he is

selveier (selveier and timber cutter in 1865; selveier and ship carpenter

in Christiania in 1875), and when he died in 1885 he is again husmann.

They lived at a husmannsplass called Bråten belonging to Østre Gårder.

Lars Larsen was born at "Nordbye St. westre", that is, a husmannsplass

belonging to Nordby vestre in Nannestad Parish.  At the time of his

marriage he was at Homble.  In the early years of their marriage, Lars

and Karen lived at Grinda.  Then he became husmann at Bråten under Rud

 øde, apparently in 1856.  By 1874 they had moved to Snatet under Herberg;

the census of 1875 says "leases a piece of land, makes a living partly at

lumbering and partly by doing day labor for farmers".  When they died,

they were living with their daughter Anne Maria's family at Nordbjerke.

are recorded on 5 April.  Their names do not, however, appear in the

emigrant records of the Christiania police department.  The Dahl family

in America reports that Elen Dorthea died soon after coming to America,
