"Mark Ellkinton, farmer, Sec. 9 <Town of Lomira>; P. O. Lomira; born in Lincolnshire, England, July, 1816; spent his early life and was educated in his native land; came to America, November, 1851; spent two and a half years in Monroe Co., N. Y.; May 19, 1854, he settled on his present farm of 80 acres, for which he paid $1,000; only 30 acres were then improved; he now has it well improved--a large, modern, brick farmhouse, good barns, etc. Married Miss Ann Bush Sept. 9, 1851; they have eight children--Mary A., Mark P., John T., Evaline H., Chas. H., Orta, William H. and Frank. Mr. Ellkinton is a stanch Republican, and is a self-made and successful pioneer farmer." (The History of Dodge County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1880. p.674)
"Farming is an occupation that has received attention at the hands of men since the world began, and no more worthy follower has it ever had than Mark Elkinton, whose farm of eighty acres is a model of neatness. He was born in Lincolnshire, England, in Frampton Parish, July 18, 1816, and there his youth and early manhood were spent. For eighteen consecutive years he gave his services to the farmers of the vicinity. He was married September 9, 1851, to Miss Nancy Bush, who was also born in Lincolnshire, and the fall following their marriage they embarked on a sailing vessel at Liverpool for the New World, and arrived in the city of New York on November 8, after a five weeks' ocean voyage. They at once went to Pittsford near Rochester, N. Y., and there resided for two and a half years, during which time Mr. Elkinton worked at anything honorable that he could find to do. In 1854 he came with his family to Dodge County, Wis., and located on a farm which he had purchased the previous year, of which about thirty acres had been cleared and on which a log house had been erected. Here they lived until 1876, when their log residence gave place to a large and neat brick dwelling house, and good barns and other necessary outbuildings were erected. When he came to this country Mr. Elkinton had little or no means, but through his own enterprise, energy and economy became the owner of a comfortable home, and is, with reason, considered one of the substantial farmers of Dodge County. Since coming to this country he has identified himself with the Republican party and his first presidential vote was cast for John C. Fremont in 1856. Since that time he has never missed an election and has voted for every presidential nominee of the Republican party. In November, 1881, he was called upon to mourn the death of his wife, who had borne him nine children: Mary A., who died after reaching womanhood; Mark P., who is the head of a family and is the agent and operator at Brownsville, Wis.; Thomas J., who is a farmer and carpenter, lives in South Dakota; Eveline H., is with her father; Charles H., is a graduate of Rush Medical College, Chicago, and is practicing his profession at Neillsville, Wis.; Nancy E., died in early childhood; Auta A., is a young lady at home; William H., is at home, and Frank B. The last two are engaged in tilling the home farm. Mr. Elkinton is one of the honored citizens of Dodge County, and his sterling traits of character have won him innumerable friends. He is of the stuff of which good citizens are made, and such men America gladly welcomes to her shores." (Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin. Chicago: Goodspeed Brothers, 1894. p.430)
